About Xi Software

A UK company specialising in mainframe-class systems management for Unix and Linux. Incorporated 1986; Xi-Text in production since 1984, Xi-Batch since 1990.

Xi Software is a UK company which specialises in the development and world-wide marketing of mainframe-class systems management software and services for Unix and Linux. It was incorporated in 1986. Xi-Text was first released in 1984 and Xi-Batch in 1990; both are still developed, packaged and supported today. Xi-Exec joins them as the third product in the range.

The company specialises entirely in job scheduling and print management. In its own words, from the 2007 company flyer:

We specialise entirely in UNIX and Linux high-quality job scheduling and print management software. We don't do anything else. We concentrate on making these the best, the most robust and the most flexible products in the market today.

Xi Software, company flyer, 2007

Alongside the products we offer software implementation and customisation, training, and general Unix and Linux consultancy.

How the company works

Xi Software is committed to providing system management products that are cost effective, functionally rich and readily integrated, backed up with high quality technical support. It is able to respond rapidly to new customer requirements because it has close integration between the technical support and development functions - the engineers who answer a support call are the engineers who build the products.

Support

What it covers

Support goes to customers on a maintenance contract and covers use of the products, fault reporting, enhancement requests and general enquiries, by telephone and by email, with email treated at the same priority as a call. 24x7 is available: lines are answered around the clock, engineering attendance outside office hours is by appointment, and what a given customer receives depends on their contract. Teams are in the UK, the EU and Australasia. Support and services

Licensing

Bought once

Licences are perpetual, tiered by processor class. New major versions carrying additional functionality and performance go to every customer on maintenance. Licensing and evaluation

What that commits us to

The network protocol is a compatibility contract with thirty years of customer integrations. When the products were hardened in 2026 against malicious network input, the protocol was deliberately left intact rather than break the integrations built against it.

The same discipline shows in how the software is built. Xi Software makes no kernel modification. That is policy, and it is what ensures co-existence with other applications, portability, and full product availability across a wide range of platforms - many Unix platforms and most Linux distributions, shipped as native packages.
